Paste a transcript, enter how long the audio or video runs, and get an accurate words per minute count. Useful when you want to know if your delivery is conversational, podcast-paced, or rushing. Speakers who land between 140 and 170 WPM tend to be the easiest to listen to.
Typical ranges
| Context | Typical WPM | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Audiobook narration | 150 to 160 | Calm, clearly articulated, easy to follow at 1x speed. |
| Conversational podcast | 130 to 150 | Natural pacing, room for pauses and tonal shifts. |
| News broadcast | 150 to 170 | Clear delivery with deliberate emphasis. |
| High-energy host | 170 to 190 | Faster pace, still listenable, common on YouTube and TikTok. |
| Auctioneer or rapid speech | 200 and above | Hard to follow without context, generally too fast for content. |

What is a good WPM for a podcast?
Most successful conversational podcasts land between 140 and 160 WPM. Faster than 180 starts to feel rushed unless the audience is engaged with the topic.
Does WPM include filler words?
In this tool yes, because the count comes straight from the transcript. If you want a clean spoken-word count, remove filler words like "um" and "uh" before pasting.
Should I slow down or speed up?
If your WPM is under 120 listeners may zone out. Over 180 listeners may miss key points. Aim for the middle unless your format calls for high energy.
